EduDream - Featured Insight

Summary:

Research suggests student motivation is associated with academic behaviors, which in turn lead to academic achievement. In the aftermath of the pandemic, educators report substantial drops in student motivation and academic performance. Among the most impacted are Black, Latinx, and students from low-income backgrounds who face compounded obstacles in accessing quality education. As interest in this topic grew, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (the “Foundation”) asked EduDream to conduct a systematic review of the literature on student Motivation, Engagement, and Persistence (MEP). EduDream reviewed over 100+ sources to explore how MEP is defined in the literature, the impact of systemic and contextual factors on student MEP, and recommendations for educators, researchers, and policymakers.

Project Deliverables:

EduDream co-created the research questions, presented emerging learnings, and delivered an 80-page synthesis summarizing evidence that addresses three research questions and eight to ten sub-questions. EduDream presented a slide deck of key learnings from the synthesis to a large portion of the US Education Program team.

Project Impact:

Project learnings provided the evidence for the Foundation to revisit and direct strategy and investments.
